Hiya!

My name’s Lauren, but my nearest and dearest call me Lozz.

Here is some information about me, but first let me give you some fun facts about myself:

  • I love Shrek

  • I can’t ride a bike

  • My favourite colour is aquamarine

  • I have always lived in Manchester

  • I love to travel

  • I’m extremely caffeine sensitive

  • I tend to surround myself with cats

I am an undergraduate student in my final year of the Fine Art program at the University of Salford. I have almost 5 years of experience of studying art in full-time education, but have travelled everywhere with a sketchbook and pen since I was a child.

When I was younger I was extremely shy, and so I’ve always found creating art to be a recording of my surroundings, feelings and beliefs in a way that really scratches the itch of self expression, without saying anything outloud.

I tend stray from binaries of single media-based processes, as I can sometimes find it to be limiting, as well as conflicting with my themes and ideas.

I also simply enjoy the idea of building multiple skills and having an open-minded approach to building my practice.

For example, I'm currently creating both digital and physical collages, heat transfer printing, and producing work specializing in fiber art- specifically felting and embroidery.

Profile

what inspires me?

I tend to absorb whatever’s in my environment, and find myself to be a mindful person who picks up on patterns and small happenings that surround me.

I enjoy going on mindful walks, where I can pick up on small happenings that surround me. For example, noticing the first bee of spring taking a stroll upon the surface of a beer bottle.

I believe that most things are connected somehow.

I am greatly inspired by the women of surrealism because of their exploration and representation of the female body and metamorphosis as well as their interests in decay and renewal.

Additionally, their nonconformity to standards for women and female artists at the time, such as many of them being queer and having non-traditional relationships, as well as expressing their trauma and patriarchy-influenced issues through their art is something I admire greatly.

I am also interested in surrealism due to the concepts behind plucking creative ingredients from the subconscious imagination to produce artwork, resulting in visually disturbing and unnerving pieces that originate in fears and desires of the human psyche.
